About Essence
Since 1970, Essence has been the magazine that speaks
primarily to African-American women. There is not another magazine like Essence
that devotes itself to modern African-American beauty, fashion, lifestyle,
relationships, and the social issues African-American women face every day.
Dedicated to Readers
As a magazine “for and about black women” there is a close
engagement with the readership of Essence. There are point-of-view pieces that
address current issues facing African-American women, as well as
reader-submitted photos of what women are wearing trendy styles.
On-Point Features
Much of Essence magazine is about what is going on right now
in the community and the lives of African-American women, which makes it always
current with trends. Features like “News & Culture,” “10 Things we’re Talking
About,” “Single Man of the Month,” and “Career News” make Essence a magazine
that is right on point every month.
Special Issues
Since the monthly features are so specific, the topics lend
themselves to special issues of the magazine. These special issues include the
“Men’s Issue,” the “Body Issue,” and the “Reader’s Issue.” Other features of
the magazine include “Work & Wealth,” “Beauty & Hair,” seasonal fashion
previews, and the annual Black Beauty Awards.
